Why combine LoRa with 4G?
Inside a farm equipped with LoRa gateways, the ear tag can transmit small data packets through the low-power LoRa network. This helps reduce cellular traffic and battery consumption.
Depending on the selected hardware, 4G can provide an additional connection when an animal moves outside LoRa coverage. This hybrid design is suitable for large farms that need economical local coverage and broader connectivity.
Actual LoRa range depends on terrain, vegetation, gateway height, antenna design, weather and radio interference. Gateway locations should therefore be planned according to the farm map and verified through field testing.

GPS ear tag or GPS collar?
A GPS ear tag is generally smaller and causes less interference with daily animal activity. It is suitable for identification, periodic positioning and basic activity monitoring.
A GPS collar can accommodate a larger battery, solar charging and additional sensors. It may be more appropriate for frequent positioning, extended operation or virtual-fence applications.
The correct choice depends on animal type, acceptable ear weight, update frequency, required operating time, farm size and communication coverage. A pilot test is recommended before large-scale deployment.
