How to Configure a Virtual Fence Safely

A safe virtual fence is more than a circle drawn on a map. It must account for GNSS error, movement speed, network delay, terrain, hazardous areas, and the response process.

  1. Create three zones: a normal operating area, an early-warning buffer, and separate no-entry zones for roads, cliffs, ponds, railways, or construction sites. Start with a 30–100 m safety margin and adjust it after field testing. Never place the digital boundary directly on a physical hazard.
  2. Do not trigger a confirmed alarm from one GPS point. Use two or three consecutive outside points, or require the breach to continue for 30–120 seconds. Keep the first abnormal point as an early warning. Use shorter confirmation for fast vehicles and longer confirmation for slow livestock.
  3. Use adaptive tracking. Normal operation may use a power-saving interval, but a device approaching the buffer should automatically switch to more frequent positioning. Livestock may update every 30–60 seconds near the boundary; fast-moving or high-risk applications generally require shorter intervals.
  4. Configure multiple alert levels: approaching boundary, confirmed exit, prolonged breach, device offline, low battery, and tamper/removal. Send alerts to at least two responsible people through the app, web platform, SMS, or available channels.
  5. Display the last valid location together with its timestamp. An old location must never be presented as live data.
  6. Test the entire boundary for 3–7 days, including trees, buildings, valleys, metal obstructions, and weak-network areas. Measure drift, alert distance, confirmation time, and message delay before final deployment.

Recommended starting values are a 30–100 m margin, two or three consecutive points, a 30–120 second confirmation window, and at least two alert contacts. A virtual fence is an early-warning tool and cannot replace a physical barrier in life-critical areas.
