Industrial GPS Tracker Selection Guide: Matching Power, Network and Positioning to the Project
Choosing an industrial GPS tracker should begin with the application environment—not simply the price or battery capacity. A vehicle, shipping container, employee badge and livestock collar may all require location data, but their power supply, reporting interval, communication coverage and installation conditions are completely different.
Start with the Power Source
A wired tracker is usually suitable for cars, trucks, motorcycles and construction machinery. It can obtain continuous power from the vehicle and transmit frequent location updates. Features such as ignition detection, mileage statistics, remote fuel cut-off and driving-route playback can also be integrated.
For containers, trailers, livestock and mobile equipment without a permanent power source, a rechargeable or solar-powered tracker is more practical. In these projects, battery life depends heavily on the positioning frequency, network signal and data-upload interval.
A device reporting every 30 seconds consumes considerably more energy than one reporting every 30 minutes. Therefore, battery capacity alone cannot determine operating life.
Choose the Right Communication Technology
A 4G GPS tracker is appropriate when cellular coverage is stable and real-time tracking is required. It can send location, alarm and device-status data directly to the cloud platform.
A LoRaWAN GPS tracker is better suited to farms, industrial parks, mines and private areas where customers can deploy gateways. LoRaWAN can reduce cellular fees and support numerous low-power terminals, but gateway coverage must be planned correctly.
Hybrid 4G and LoRa designs provide another option. The tracker can use LoRa inside the project area and switch to cellular communication when it leaves the private network.
GPS Alone May Not Be Enough
Outdoor positioning can use GPS, BeiDou, Galileo or GLONASS. Warehouses, factories and underground areas may also need Bluetooth, Wi-Fi or other indoor positioning technologies.
