LoRa Livestock GPS Collar for Cattle and Sheep Tracking
LoRa Livestock GPS Collar for Long-Range Cattle and Sheep Tracking
Managing cattle, sheep, horses, and other grazing animals across large or remote pastures requires more than a conventional cellular tracker. Weak mobile coverage, recurring SIM charges, and high power consumption can make ordinary GPS devices unsuitable for large-scale livestock projects.
A LoRa livestock GPS collar combines satellite positioning with long-range, low-power wireless communication. It enables farms to monitor animal locations, movement, safety, and boundary events through a centralized livestock management platform.
How Does the System Work?
The collar obtains its position using GPS, BeiDou, or other GNSS satellites. Location, activity, battery, and alarm data are then transmitted through LoRa or LoRaWAN to a pasture gateway.
The gateway forwards the information to a cloud server using 4G, Ethernet, or another available backhaul connection. Farm managers can view the latest position, historical routes, device status, and geofence alerts through a web platform or Android/iOS application.
Main Functions
- Scheduled or real-time GPS positioning
- Long-range LoRa/LoRaWAN communication
- Virtual fence and boundary-crossing alerts
- Abnormal inactivity and movement detection
- Collar removal or tamper alarms
- Historical route and activity reports
- Low-battery and offline notifications
- Batch management for multiple farms and herds
- Optional solar-assisted charging
- Optional LoRa and 4G dual-network communication
Benefits for Large Livestock Farms
A properly positioned LoRa gateway can collect information from many collars within its coverage area. This reduces dependence on individual cellular connections and may lower operating costs while improving battery life.
Actual range depends on terrain, vegetation, buildings, antenna installation, gateway height, local frequency regulations, and transmission settings. A radio survey and field test should therefore be completed before large-scale deployment.
