Low-Power LoRaWAN Employee Tracking Badge with SOS for Indoor Location and Worker Safety

In factories, warehouses, hospitals, mines, construction sites, chemical plants, and large industrial parks, knowing the approximate location and safety status of employees can shorten emergency response times and improve daily personnel management. A low-power LoRaWAN tracking badge is designed for these environments, especially where long battery life, wide wireless coverage, and centralized device management are required.

The badge can be worn on work clothes or used as an employee ID badge. It transmits identification, location-zone, SOS, battery, and device-status information through a LoRaWAN network. Compared with solutions that continuously use cellular communication, LoRaWAN can reduce power consumption and support many endpoint devices through strategically positioned gateways.

Indoor Location Technology

GPS signals are usually weak or unavailable inside buildings. For this reason, the tracking badge can combine LoRaWAN communication with Bluetooth beacons, Wi-Fi fingerprints, RFID, GNSS, or other positioning technologies.

Bluetooth beacons can be installed at entrances, workshops, corridors, floors, equipment areas, and emergency assembly points. When a badge detects a beacon, it uploads the corresponding zone information through LoRaWAN. The platform then displays the employee’s latest known area and records movement events.

The achievable accuracy depends on the selected technology, beacon density, building materials, radio interference, gateway layout, and project budget. Site testing is therefore necessary before final deployment.

Main Functions

  • Indoor zone-level employee positioning
  • One-button SOS emergency alarm
  • Restricted-area entry and exit alerts
  • Electronic geofences and overstay alarms
  • Long-inactivity or abnormal-movement detection
  • Man-down or fall detection as an optional function
  • Badge removal and tamper alerts
  • Low-battery and device-offline notifications
  • Historical movement and alarm records
  • Employee attendance and mustering management
  • Web, Android, and iOS platform access
  • API integration with access control, attendance, EHS, and dispatch systems

Typical Applications

The system can be used for lone-worker protection, contractor management, hazardous-area monitoring, hospital staff safety, warehouse personnel coordination, mine-worker management, construction-site attendance, and emergency evacuation mustering.

During an emergency, the employee can press the SOS button. The platform receives the worker identity, latest location zone, alarm time, and device status. Supervisors can then contact nearby personnel or organize a faster response.
